Crassula ovata (krass-you-luh oh-vah-tuh) is a resilient and easy to grow succulent that is native to South Africa and Mozambique. It has thick woody stems, delightfully plump, shiny leaves and is loved for the low level of care it requires. With their long lifespans and durability, jade plants make great gifts that can last a lifetime.
Bright (but not scorching) to medium light. Some varieties may show a red tinge on leaf edges when exposed to plenty of sunlight.
When soil is dry to touch, water dirt directly and avoid the leaves. Do not overwater. Time between watering depends on the environment, and can be from 1-2+ weeks. Distilled water preferred.
Thrives in dry soil - cactus or succulent mix is best. Likes to be crowded, so rarely needs to be potted up. If it is too crowded or gets top heavy, move to a larger, heavier option, with good drainage as usual.
Stem cutting // Cut a branch from a well-established plant that has at least four pairs of leaves. Allow it to heal for several days. Place directly into moist dirt, and do not water until roots are forming. Alternatively, place cutting into a cup of water, and watch roots sprout before eventually planting into dirt.
Leaf cutting // Place a fallen or broken-off leaf directly on top of dirt. Water very little, if at all. Do not plant into dirt until roots are formed. Treat like a normal plant when it's 2 inches tall.
Mature plants can be encouraged to flower in late winter or early spring if given a rest period with reduced watering, no fertilizer, and full darkness at night.
Squishy, yellow leaves? Overwatered.
Brown, wrinkled leaves, brown spots, or leaf loss? Underwatered.
Toxic to pets who like eating plants. If you are a pet owner, please do your research before bringing a sansevieria or any other plant home!
